Learn the history of grain and processing. Grind grain manually and electrically. Learn how easy, quick, nutritious, and delicious it is to grind and bake. What about sprouted wheat and different grains? Hard vs. soft grain, spelt, quinoa, and much more. Incorporate fresh ground whole wheat and all it’s benefits in all your cooking. Even those with gluten allergies have been able to tolerate this less processed or sprouted grain bread recipes. Learn all the basics at this one-day class. Continuous Strand Weaving on a Triangle loom:

Learn a weaving technique that is enjoying a revival. Thought to have been developed by the Vikings the Continuous Strand weaving method is a fun and easy way to weave your own shirts, ponchos, coats, bags, shawls… anything! This method has no warping or setting up time! Makes symmetrical patterns with little to no planning and has no yarn waste. It is a finished product when it comes off the loom! Follow the life cycle of a Bombyx Mori as it creates one the most amazing fabrics on earth: silk! During this program children will find out just what it takes for the silkworm to make silk and learn some of the science behind it. They will have the chance to watch as we extract silk the way it has been done for hundreds of years and even get to try it themselves. Learn how the ancient Chinese discovered this amazing fiber and why they wanted to keep it a secret. Follow the Silk Road as it spans thousands of miles, hundreds of years and many different cultures. Learn how the silk trade fueled people's passion for exploration and how silk even played a part in the discovery of America! Learn the art of silk painting while painting your own silk scarf!

What makes the Navajo weaving so special? Find out how hard it really is and how long it really takes to prepare for and weave a Navajo tapestry. Listen to the legends and lore surrounding Navajo weaving and discover how much weaving was and still is a part of their life. Find out the impact the changing times had on the weaving community and life of the Navajos. Follow the story of a young Navajo girl on the path to becoming a weaver and the story of a special tapestry through the eyes of the goat who’s hair is woven into it while working on your own weaving.

Processing: From Sheep to Shawl

The History of our Clothes
Learn just what it takes to go from “wooly mess” to “wooly dress” We will cover the whole process of growing the fiber, shearing, skirting, picking, washing, carding/combing, and spinning. How it has changed over the centuries starting with only our hands to rocks to ornately carved top whorls and finally to the spinning wheel. Learn fun and interesting facts about world history such as the effect wool had on the revolutionary war and how cotton spurred the civil war on. Learn about many different fibers: alpaca, rabbit, goat, sheep, and fun plant fibers such as corn and soy! Kids will make their own drop spindle and become a part of such an amazing legacy!

Needle Felting: A new twist on an old art

Learn to “paint” with fiber and how to sculpt with wool! It’s a fun and rewarding project using only needles, wool and a foam base. Decorate a book mark and make your own 3D ladybug!

Felting: A fabric of life

Learn the ancient art of wet felting and who used it. Follow the nomadic Mongols as they perfect the process of making their houses or yurts, out of this amazing fabric. Discover how the Turks make special hats out of felt and how the people of Kyrgystan make beautiful rugs even today! Using only wool, water, soap, and some elbow grease you will make your own felted bookmark and Easter egg!

Introducing the Beltway Bag.

Named the Beltway Bag because mom just about completed this on a trip to and from Baltimore.

This is a fun and easy project to make a unique one-of-a kind bag. Using double stranded yarn and large needles makes this bag work up quickly. Only one stitch is used which gives it a wonderful texture and as an extra bonus it works up rather mindlessly too. It’s a great beginner project but also good for those more advanced knitters that need a project they don’t have to think about much. This is great to felt in washer or to sew a liner in and this size is perfect either way.

This will be our knit-along project starting August 11th at 7pm

My family’s favorite kombucha use. We enjoy kombucha mixed with orange juice regularly but found this to be very refreshing lately. If you need instructions on making your own Kombucha research on line or find recipe in Nourishing Traditions found at Upper Room Studio. Nourishing Traditions is a must have for healthy eating. Valuable cookbook and complete food education in one book. If you need it, we normally have a kombucha mushroom at all times. Kombucha is a powerful liver detoxifier and promotes healthy bacteria in the gut.

Kombucha Slurpee

1 cup carrot juice (Juice your own or buy at grocery store)

2 cups orange juice

½ to 1 ½ cup kombucha depending upon taste

1 TB raw honey (optional)

Blender filled with ice

Blend all ingredients on high till slushy and enjoy. Our children love this and the kombucha gives a slight carbonation which refreshes.

Announcing Upper Room’s Kids Summer Workshop:

First session: June 27th-July 1st from 9:30-3:30 $150 per child
Second session: August 1st-5th from 9:30-3:30pm $150 per child

Learn the whole process from Sheep to scarf including: shearing, skirting, washing, and carding the fleece until you can finally spin it on both a drop spindle and a spinning wheel! Participants will also get to dye, learn basic weaving, knit, crochet, extract and dye silk from silkworm cocoons, Japanese braiding: kumihimo, wet felt, needle felt in 2-D and sculpt in 3-D. So many things to make and do!

Feed and care for angora bunnies while learning the history of fiber and experience first hand the fun of transforming it into useful art. Bring lunch and sunscreen and play in the pool.

Please Help Our Fellow Spinners In Japan

Dear Readers,

I was recently contacted by my friend Yuka Aoshima, of Kakara Woolworks with a request to help alert the international spinning community to the dire situation in Japan in the aftermath of the earthquake. She is a trusted friend, the organizer of my workshops there last year, the proprietor of a respected spinning shop and is slated to be the organizer of the 'Tokyo Spinning Party' in three years (Tokyo's largest fiber festival).

Our media seems to be incredibly focused on the nuclear plant and it's potential trouble but the actual human situation is dire. Yuka has organized a fund that will go directly towards relief in the Tohoku area, probably the most famous area for hand-spinning in the country. She was hoping to reach the international craft community knowing that in normal times, we are all interested in each other and united in our common endeavors. And so it makes sense to reach out in this extreme time of need and try and connect with each other, through our common threads so to speak, and make an effort to give what we can, do what we can, spread the word, send some money, or at the very least think hard about what we would want people to do for us, were we in that situation. (Which is never far from my thoughts being a Californian sleeping on four fault lines!). Yuka needed help communicating with you all, but I am not there, I have not witnessed the situation first hand so I asked her to explain a little and I would translate. However, she puts it pretty well and I will excerpt from her email here:

'As you know We are in tragic time in Japan.

I would like you to help us for Japanese spinners and Japanese peoples.

There are many spinners and weavers around Tohoku area in Japan.

I want to start Spinner Fund for Japan through Paypal.

Could you tell any Spinners friends about my fund if possible?

I have much responsibility this fund, I was working some NGO for refugees before,

I am sure I will find best way to give fund for refugee.

Japanese Red Cross Society is very good to give fund, but their fund money will takes long time to move for refugees and Victims.

The bad news upset us, But many peoples can not escape,

Because of huge damage from earthquake , no petrol, no electricity, too much refugees..

We can not eat food and water from around Fukushima area because of radioactivity...

I can not imagine what happened now and in the future ...

i want to tell peoples ( oversea spinners ) about Tohoku area what going at the moment, there are many spinners, dyers, weavers as well as Iwate Prefecture is most famous place for handspun in Japan. also many sheep farms there.

12,787 people died , a missing person were 14,991 people in 12 capital way prefectures, and 4,661 injured people.

The person forced to life as refugees amounts to approximately 154,000 in approximately 2,330 places of 18 capital way prefectures.

my place Saitama prefectures has many refugees from Fukushima.

around Kanto area ( tokyo-saitama-chiba-kanagawa) we just need to save on electricity all the time.

we still have many aftershock everyday.

even saitama tokyo area peoples feel so scary too.

most danger is fukushima nuclear accident.

we really really hope it will be better very very soon.

I have noticed that the Japanese write emails like it's poetry. Every line is separated. But like good poetry, only the few most important words are used. I received another email recently from a well respected spinner in Kyoto who said that even in this time of difficulty, in fact especially in this time of difficulty, one of the only moments of balance and hope that people have found is in busying themselves in spinning. In using their hands and letting the peace that comes in that kinetic experience ground them in uncertain times. This, we can all relate to.

Welcome to the New Year! We are looking forward to some new fiber fun this year!

To kick off the New Year we are going to do a “fiber-along” project for our Thursday night knit-ins.
We are going to introduce the wonderful world of wet felting with a very easy but really cool trivet and rug.
It’s so easy but the results are incredible. If you have ever wanted to try to braid a wool rug this is a great easy alternative.

We will start the 13th of January during our regular sit-togethers. Cost is $45 for wool roving, colors of your choice, to make the trivet and rug. You will have no problem completing the project by the end of January. During the 3 Thursday's class you will complete the trivet and have the rug braided and ready to finish at home.

Shawl Class

This shawl was a variation of the usual triangle shawl from the trianglular loom.

Mom did a 3-ply yarn with a little sparkle in it and we both wove the panels.

I think it turned out lovely.

Our beautiful model is Charlene, a sweet friend that was just stopping by.

We are thinking of having a class on triangle loom weaving in January but we would need enough interest before we order all the looms.

New Soap

On Saturday and Sunday we made almost 40 pounds of soap.

Almost all of it is out of the molds and air curing. They will be ready right before Christmas!

We have a couple of new lines, let me introduce them:

Peppermint Patty smells good enough to eat! Boasting a invigorating peppermint smell and chocolate swirls. LemonsMilk containing goats milk, the refreshing scent of lemon and dried lemon peels for gentle exfoliation.

We also have vegan soap using all vegetable oils. Our Clovely soap is lightly scent with cloves and ground clove swirls, perfect for the scent sensitive ones. Rosemary, lavender, teatree and pumice make up our Gardener's Friend, great for getting those earth-loving hands clean. And our Orangeyouglad is so refreshing, it even has gentle exfoliating hand dried orange peels.

Oh my...

So shetlands are a little persnickety about their coats. Sometimes they need to be shorn twice a year and sometimes not. I was hoping "not" for this year but by early November I knew she would need to be shorn. So, I decided to try.

I hadn't sheared a sheep since the class back in March.

I knew I needed to start somewhere so I took a deep breath and turned the shears on.

Can't you see the apprehension in my face?

Of course Lydie was a stinker the whole time. But we managed to do ok together. She better get used to it though! I finally finished her after almost 2 hours. Whew! It didn't take me that long in class but then again, I didn't have someone reminding me of "the dance steps".

And boy, was I sore the next day!

Grind grain bake bread, cookies, crackers…just in time for the holidays

Nov 5, 2-4pm $25
Learn the history of grain and processing. Grind grain manually and electrically. Learn how easy, quick, nutritious, and delicious it is to grind and bake. What about sprouted wheat and different grains? Hard vs. soft grain, spelt, quinoa, and much more. Incorporate fresh ground whole wheat and all it’s benefits in all your cooking. Nov. 19th 2-4pm $30
Come see how inexpensive and easy it is to make your own yogurt and ricotta cheese. Regular milk will be transformed into delicious and nutritious yogurt and cheese. In the way of nourishing traditions the whey will be used and not thrown out. Only normal household kitchen equipment will be used. Anyone can do this in their own home.

Fiber Arts for the Beginner (overview):
Nov. 13th 10-12pm $35
Learn about the history of spinning and try your hand at various cultures drop spindles before you try the traditional spinning wheel. Watch demos; learn about different natural and synthetic fibers. Learn about needle felting by watching and doing!! Come see our angora goats, angora bunnies, and sheep and see how we go from “sheep to shawl”.
Call for more in depth spinning class: use at least 10 different spinning wheels while you learn to spin! Try before you buy!

Beginning weaving on a rigid heddle loom:
Learn the basics of warping and weaving on a rigid heddle loom. Make a wrap shawl, table runner, bag, or scarf.... it's up to you! Looms will be provided. Call for more information!

Dyeing class November 6th 1-4pm $75. Come learn the diffenerce between hand painted and hand dyed yarns and learn how to do both of them! Kettle dying, steaming, painting... come watch the demos and hand paint or dye your own using the steaming method. Each participant will dye 1 1/2 pounds of 100% Merino roving or 4 skeins of 400 yds each 100% merino yarn or have the best of both worlds: 3/4 pound of merino roving and 2 skeins of merino yarn. Use 14 different jacquard colors to create your own work of art.

Everything will be provided!

Wear dirty clothes! :-)

Fiberfest is again upon us! It is hard to believe it has been a year already.
We will be closed at our shop October 9th BUT we will be down at the Julia A. Purnell musuem in Snow Hill for fiberfest.
It is going to be a great time! Sheep shearing, live music, spinning and weaving demos, silk worm extraction and so much more!
Festival is from 10-4pm and hope to see you there!

I just realized that the Events tab listed the Angora Goat shearing as 1pm with no date. We had our goats shorn on the 26th. We have plenty of mohair if anyone is interested and we look forward to next shearing!This was the correct info.

Eclectic Wheel Spinning -- An introduction into the art and techniques of creating uniquely creative yarns. In this class you will learn to spin outside the box of traditional spinning to produce yarns that are beautiful, textural, and full of imagination! "Slubby" yarns-- thick and thin

plying --with a stripe, with a wave, into boucle

coils, stacks ,super coils and

autowrapping! More will be covered depending upon class time.

Basic spinning knowledge required: need to have a good grasp on basic spinning, be able to spin a relatively consistent and reliable single, and the basic workings of their wheel.

Whew! What a summer it has been!
We have been so busy doing Camps, Classes in schools, expanding our farm and store, and wow, so much more.

And Fiberfest is already on the horizons!

A friend I have known ever since we were little has become a peace corp servicewoman and is stationed in Bulgaria. In trying to help her area she noticed the amazing socks the women created. She is on leave right now and we have the immense pleasure to be the first outlet in which these handmade socks will be sold! Not only that but Anna will be there to answer questions and tell about her work in Bulgaria.
She will be at our shop Thurs. the 29th at 7:30pm
All proceeds will go to the women that created them!

Clean water is so important for us but if it doesn't taste good why would we want to drink it?
We had this problem for years. Our water tasted ( and sometimes even looked like!) iron. In Ocean City it tastes like chlorine.
A couple of years ago we got a Berkey water filter and it has done wonders! We love our water now and even the kids drink it all the time!

In case you haven’t heard of this before:

1) To participate, you need a 2010 bag, a passport, and a love of fiber (the yarn kind). See a local participating shop (like us) to purchase.

2) Having an official bag entitles you to a 20% discount on yarn at participating shops during the month on September 2010.

3) If while you are shopping you spend over $25 at a shop, you will be entered into a weekly drawing at that shop (and for every $25 you spend you get another entry).

4) Be sure to get your passport stamped (in Sept 2010 only) when you visit a participating shop.

5) If you visit all 10 stores during the crawl (September), you qualify for a grand prize drawing. Just turn in your completely stamped passport page to the last shop you visit.

With everythingthat has happened since STICHES EAST I haven't even stopped to let everyone know that we have the newest wheel from Kromski: the Fantasia

What is not obvious is a new style single drive flyer design. The whorl is “changeable” for different speeds; to change bobbins, the front of the flyer simply pulls off - no drive band to deal with. Very fast bobbin change. Watch a video to see how it is done. The flyer also has sliding hooks. And both the flyer and the wheel spin on sealed ball bearings for a truly smooth feel.

The Fantasia is made of European alder and available in several wood and color combinations.
